[St. Symeon the New Theologian]

[Archbishop DMITRI]

"The Orthodox Church has existed continuously in the Middle East and Greece from the time of the Apostles, and is the Faith of the majority of Christians in Greece, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. With the exception of Rome, the local churches mentioned in the New Testament (Corinth, Thessaloniki, Antioch, etc.) have existed continuously until today and are all Orthodox churches.

The Orthodox Church in America is the successor of the first Orthodox mission to North America begun by St. Herman and other Russian monks in Alaska in 1794. The Church was granted autocephalous status (self-governing) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1970. At the that time we took the name Orthodox Church in America because our mission is to be a Church for all peoples in America, and not for one particular ethnic group.

We are in full communion with the other Orthodox Churches in this country and throughout the world.

St. Symeon Orthodox Church was founded in Birmingham in 1977. The present church building was purchased in 1987. Some of our members are "cradle" Orthodox of Russian, Romanian and Greek backgrounds, but the majority are converts to the Orthodox faith.

Our bishop is Archbishop DMITRI of Dallas and the South and our priest is Father Alexander Fecanin.
